When I went to shadow in Mitchell, I was able to help the Pharmacy Technicians fill prescriptions for different facilities. I was able to put the specific pills in different containers, put the name of the patient on the package, label when they are to be taken, and put a stamp on the pack. This helped me learn what pharmacists watch over during their work days and what they need to check. It also helped me learn what some of the pills do.
Lewis Family Drug is a local pharmacy in Mitchell that really relies on business from the local people and facilities. A lot of people love the fact that the workers in Lewis get to know the patients and care about their health. Lewis supplies different drugs to many different people and places in and around Mitchell. They package and dispense medicines to the jail in Mitchell, 2 nursing homes/ assisted living places, Aurora Plains Academy in Plankinton, and the Abbott house. They deliver these drugs about 2-3 times a week and the pills are packaged in the beginning of the day on Monday.
On Tuesday, March 22, I was able to miss school and shadow at Lewis Drug in Mitchell for the second time. I really enjoy shadowing here because my mentor teaches me a lot about the medicine that he is giving out and makes it fun. When I went, I was able to listen to messages from doctors and write down what I heard them prescribing. I also got to find the medicine on the shelves, count them, and put them into the computer to help with inventory. The last thing I was able to do was fill prescriptions that were being sent out to people who needed their pills pre-dispensed into a containers for every day of the month. It was fun to be able to help the pharmacists out and to see what my daily tasks would be if I did go to school to become a pharmacist.
On Saturday, March 4th, I went to Platte to shadow at Hoffman Drug. I shadowed for about 9 hours and got to see what it was like for someone owning their own pharmacy. Bret told me how they got to have the opportunity they have, what they have done to make the place better, and what they still need to do. He showed me what the daily routine is at their pharmacy. He also told me about schooling which was very helpful because I want to know what to expect when I get into the pharmacy program! I am happy that I chose to have 2 different mentors because it helps me decide what kind of pharmacy job I want to go into and what I have to look forward to!
We are required to make a presentation about our job that we are shadowing for. I am glad that we were asked to do this because it gives me the opportunity to learn more about Pharmacy. There is always something new I can learn about the job I want to study when I go to college. This also helped me learn what schools I could go to to get a great education. I already knew a lot about Pharmacy because I wrote my research paper about it too. I'm excited to continue to learn about the profession and how I can be a great pharmacist someday.
