We are required to make a presentation about our job that we are shadowing for. I am glad that we were asked to do this because it gives me the opportunity to learn more about Pharmacy. There is always something new I can learn about the job I want to study when I go to college. This also helped me learn what schools I could go to to get a great education. I already knew a lot about Pharmacy because I wrote my research paper about it too. I'm excited to continue to learn about the profession and how I can be a great pharmacist someday.

It has been a little difficult for me to meet up with my mentor in Mitchell because they are very busy and I was too when sports were going on. I think it will be easier now that sports are over and I will have more free time during the weekends, days we don't have school, and after school. I'm excited to shadow more because I want to learn more about what Pharmacists do and I had fun shadowing the first time I went!
When I went to shadow in Mitchell, I was shown how Lewis Family Drug fills the prescriptions for different places around Mitchell. They will the medications for people at the Abbott House, an assisted living facility, and the Jail. They have all the patients names and medications these people are on and they give them punch cards with their medications in them for breakfast, dinner, and supper. They usually have to fill these prescriptions once or twice a week and send them to the different locations. Cory said it takes about three hours to fill every person's medications if one person is doing it.
I am very glad I decided to shadow a pharmacist for my senior project because I have learned that it is definitely something I want to do in the future. I enjoyed seeing first hand what they do on a day-to-day basis and I am excited to learn more. This makes my decision to go to SDSU next year as a pre-pharmacy student even easier!
On Saturday, January 21, I went to Mitchell to meet with my first mentor. I really enjoyed meeting with him and learning what he does on a regular basis. I got to learn what some medications were and what they were used for, how they get calls and requests from doctors around town, and how they interact with the people coming in. Cory told me next time I go shadow him it will be on a week day so it will be a lot busier with more pharmacists there. Also, he will do a consultation on someone to try to get them away from some medication that they may not need to take anymore!
On Wednesday, November 23, I drove to Platte to talk to my second mentor for my senior project. It was nice to see the place I was going to be working in for my project and also meet the people who are going to be teaching me for the next couple months. The couple that I am shadowing in Platte, actually met at Lewis Drug in Mitchell, the other place I am shadowing, so I know that Lewis is a good facility to shadow at and the couple in Platte learned great things there. I am excited to start shadowing over Christmas break!
On November 16, I went to Mitchell to see my mentor at Lewis Drug. It was cool to see where I'm going to be shadowing and what the person I'm shadowing is like. Cory told me about his job and where he went to school. I still have to go to Platte and meet my other mentor which I will be doing on Wednesday, November 23. I am excited to start shadowing and learning more about pharmacy.
I have finished up writing my senior research paper that we did over our senior projects. It had to be 8-10 pages long so it was a very time consuming effort. I enjoyed writing this paper a lot more than I thought I would because I chose an interesting topic. I liked that I learned more about the career I want to go in to and I will know more while I am with my mentor. Although the senior paper took a lot of time and effort, I am glad I got the chance to write it.
For the past 4 weeks, we have been working on taking notes from our resources so we know what we want to write in our paper. Our first goal was 10 notecards, then 20, then 36, then on the 28th, all of our notecards are due. This is a very stressful part of my senior project because writing out all these notecards is very time consuming. This project takes a lot of time and effort so I hope I will have enough notecards to finish my entire 10 page paper. It is always fun writing these notecards because you get to learn new things about the profession.
I have talked to both of my mentors about what I need to do while I am at their pharmacy and when I can start shadowing them. Lewis Drug in Mitchell and Hoffman Drug in Platte have both agreed to allow me shadow at their pharmacies. I will get a feel on what pharmacy is like in two very different surroundings. Hoffman Drug in Platte even mentioned to me that a couple other students from Platte are also shadowing them. I am very excited to learn more about this field.
